Joseph Gordon-Levitt is making his directorial debut with Don Jon.
The flick, which stars Joseph and Scarlett Johansson, tells the story of a New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, who develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.
JGL explains that the movie is based on the concept of “expectations” generated by society. “That’s sort of what the movie is making fun of, is whether it’s movies or TV shows or pornography or pop songs on the radio, sometimes we get unrealistic expectations about what love and sex and relationships are supposed to be and this is a comedy about that.”
And considering Joseph wrote, directed and stars in the movie, did he ever contemplate not casting himself?
“No, I always thought it would be really fun and kind of hilarious for me to play this guy and I love playing characters that have a different upbringing for me, that have a different voice or posture.”
The actor, who is known for starring in roles from 10 Things I Hate About You to Dark Knight Rises and Inception, adds the ability to transform in to different characters is what he enjoys most about acting.
“Getting to play Jon and disappearing into this guy and become him, you know? ‘And do my workouts and eat my chicken and drink protein shakes and get my hair high and tight.’ All that was really fun stuff for me.”
Catch Gordon as Jon in Don Jon out in theaters September 27.
